FRENZ is supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) through its International Development Cooperation. Our primary partnership is with CARICOM, and we work with member states including Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Grenada, Belize, Guyana and Jamaica, along with regional organisations including OECS, CDB & CCREEE Contact us to see how FRENZ is supporting the energy transition.

Who we are

What is FRENZ?

Since 2014, Aotearoa New Zealand has been working in partnership with Caribbean partners to progress development of geothermal energy resources. In 2023, Aotearoa New Zealand committed a further NZD11.6M to the five-year Phase 3 of the Aotearoa New Zealand - Caribbean Facility for Renewable Energy (FRENZ). The Facility is designed to support partners to achieve their renewable energy and climate change goals by accessing the technical resources required to obtain finance and implement renewable energy projects, with a focus on geothermal energy.

Areas of Support:

Geothermal development support including project planning, technical studies and fieldwork

Formal capacity building through training, internships and study tours

Capacity supplementation and informal capability building through in-house advisors

Renewable energy technical assistance, reviews and advisory to unlock funding from development partners

Gender-focussed renewable energy initiatives

How we work

Our Approach

FRENZ is delivered by Cowater International in association with JRG Energy and Elemental Group. These suppliers leverage Aotearoa New Zealand’s geothermal and renewable energy expertise to respond to local needs and priorities. The Facility provides technical services, capability building, capacity supplementation, and facilitate progress on renewable energy projects through building relationships with and support from other partners.

Goal and Objectives

The Goal of FRENZ is to increase access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and resilient energy sources as an enabler of economic development in the Eastern Caribbean. The Objectives of FRENZ are to:

Deepen our existing partnerships in geothermal development for mutual benefit

Reduce, avoid or remove greenhouse gas emissions

Enable Caribbean communities to benefit from increased use of indigenous energy resources
